Has self-confessed hitman Edgar Matobato requested for state protection against Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and his cohorts?
The story has been shared hundreds to thousands of times on Facebook already and it definitely comes as a surprise to many, considering how just in October last year, Matobato was under Trillanes’ protective custody.
We traced the source of the story and it turned out to be the fake news site Aljazeera-channel.com.
The story’s title, “Edgar Matobato request for ‘State protection’ to surrender and unmask Trillanes,” does make it seem like Matobato has changed his mind and is now pulling off something that will put the senator in trouble.
According to Aljazeera-channel.com’s May 17 article, Matobato is asking for state protection to surrender and reveal “incriminating information” about Trillanes and his camp. It also noted Trillanes’ “fake witness,” referring to Guillermina Arcillas, also turned against Trillanes, confessing that the senator and other individuals were forcing her to testify against President Rodrigo Duterte on the EJKs and the killings allegedly committed by the Davao Death Squad (DDS).
But Meme Buster has already proven that Aljazeera-channel.com is a fake news site. It has shared fake stories, such as Vice President Leni Robredo saying she will strip naked if Senator Leila de Lima won’t get released from prison, UK Prime Minister commenting on Duterte’s ouster, US imposing a travel sanction on Robredo, and more.
The story’s spread on social media, though, did not stop with Aljazeera-channel as it was picked up by a blogspot – aloncdy.blogspot.com. As what Facebook Links has showed, the blogspot’s cover of the story reached almost 3,000 shares!
Alon Calinao Day, the owner of the blogspot, believed the lie that the fake news site is selling! It is obvious in how he wrote about the “Aljazeera News” on his May 17 blog, “Self-confessed Killer Edgar Matobato Asks for ‘State Protection’ Against Trillanes And His Cohorts.”
Just like his previous blogs, he quoted his own opinion on his blog, saying:
“In a blog post of Mr. Alon Calinao Dy, he said, “I think Duterte’s enemies are crazy and hunger for power. That’s one of the reasons why they want to oust the president. They don’t want good for the Filipino people and they don’t even want the positive change in our country.”
Dy even shared the news to the Facebook group “Marcos Loyalist.”
Another netizen also shared the fake story.
Mr. Riyoh, another Die-hard Duterte Supporter, shared the story on his page, although he expressed that this is possibly fake news.
Sadly, Dy, like many other netizens, fell for a hoax!
He also shared a few fake stories in the past, such as De Lima crying after being kicked out of a conference in Germany, Ronnie Dayan’s wife filing adultery charges against De Lima and Dayan, world leaders congratulating Duterte for his administration’s P6 billion drug bust, and Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach giving away female condoms for HIV awareness.
There are no credible reports about Matobato asking for state protection to incriminate Trillanes and the story even came from a fake news site, something that the blogger may have overlooked, intentionally or unintentionally.
