According to a post by the Facebook page “Sen. Manny Pacquiao Libreng Pabahay” on December 23, 2016, the senator is giving away 2,000 free houses to lucky winners from anywhere around the Philippines. It further claimed that Pacquiao will pick the winners from the Facebook page alone.

Just like any other promotional gimmicks, the page also gave a few steps on what interested participants can do to join the raffle. First, it urged everybody to like the Facebook page. Second, it encouraged netizens to share the post if they want to ensure their spot in the raffle. Third, they hve to put their address in the comments section. Fourth and last, they have to tag at least five relatives on Facebook to up their chances of winning the raffle.

Don’t be surprised to see the post’s comments section still active even up to this day. This only goes to show that the post was successful in making thousands of netizens believe in what seemed to be a hoax promo.

While Pacquaio was reported to have prepared a housing project in February 2016, based on his Facebook post, it seemed like there was a limitation to who would qualify for his free housing.

“I’m so happy giving this houses free to my constituents in Sarangani Province from my own pocket more than a thousand families are the beneficiaries. And I’m still building more because I always believe what the bible says; 1 Peter 4:8-10 NIV,” Pacquiao wrote.

“[8] Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. [9] Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. [10] Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. Thank you Lord for everything even some people are criticizing me but I’m still happy because you live in me. @johnnybantilan @davidsisson @jinkeepacquiao,” he added.

Take note how Pacquiao mentioned his Sarangani constituents as the recipients of his free housing, not just any Filipino from any part of the Philippines. This is one of the clues that led us to believe that the “Sen. Manny Pacquiao Libreng Pabahay” page is sharing a hoax. The page encouraged its followers to comment their addresses, instead of probably saying that only those who are from Sarangani are qualified to join the raffle.

Another clue is that Senator Pacquiao himself has his own verified Facebook page. Wouldn’t he have announced the free housing himself through his own social media account if it were really true? Something as big of a deal as a free housing would likely be worthy post on his own account.

There is also the matter of the page encouraging netizens to like and share the post, earning it more engagement. It even boldly claimed that Pacquiao would pick the winners from what now seems like a bogus Facebook page as it said, “Pipiliin nya (Pacquiao) ang mga masuwerteng mananalo dito sa page na ito.”

While it looks like a raffle of some sort, the page did not even give more details as to when it will conclude and when the winners will be drawn. It just kept on urging everybody to interact with the page by commenting their current residence.

For those who want real updates from Senator Pacquiao himself, you can visit his verified Facebook page. No matter how great the libreng pabahay raffle seems, don’t get too carried away. It is likely a hoax to get people to like the bogus Facebook page, even if it meant deceiving them.
