Busted: Did Inquirer invent “President-in-reserve” for VP Leni? No, it was used in the 1986 ConCom

When the Philippine Daily Inquirer uploaded a photo of Vice President Leni Robredo taking her oath at around 9 in the morning on June 30, their caption caused quite a stir. It goes:

“Leni Robredo on Thursday took her oath as the 14th vice president of the Republic of the Philippines, the only second woman to rise as President-in-reserve.”

There were netizens who reacted negatively to the term Inquirer used to describe Robredo’s position as “President-in-reserve.”

Some interpreted this as an allusion to Robredo eyeing the presidency and considered it “alarming.” Others even brought up anti-Liberal Party sentiments by saying that this could mean “Plan B” is once again in order. One Facebook user also deemed “President in Reserve” as a “very schemy word.”

There were netizens, though, who were quite happy in congratulating Robredo.

But an obviously anti-LP Facebook page posted this meme, drawing more attention to the term “President-in-reserve” used by Inquirer. It even came with a caption:

“Inquirer invented a new job title: Leni is President-in-reserve. Tapos galit pag nasasabihan ng yellow biased media.”

Did Inquirer really make up that title for a vice president?
