Busted: President Duterte said his salary is P130,000, but it is actually much more than that

Vera Files fact checked President Rodrigo Duterte’s claim about receiving a salary of P130,000 per month and it turned out that he is receiving much more than that.

On January 25, Duterte first mentioned that he is only earning P130,000 per month.

“Ako nga 130,000 lang ako. Duha ka pamilya [laughter]. Totoo. Gibuhi na ko… Eh wala akong magawa eh. 130,000. Unsaon mong pagtunga ana? Kay katong uban nako mga anak, nanga-minyo, unya tamang-tama lang .”

He said it during the inauguration of New Hope Village, a rehabilitation housing project for the Typhoon Yolanda victims in Sta. Elena, Tacloban City. You can watch it from 8:55 to 9:27 here:

And President Duterte said it again on April 10 at the Davao International Airport, before he left for his Middle East trip.

“Ang salary ko as president P130,000 lang. Hindi ako nagpipirma nang… wala ako pinirmahang allowance or nothing. Yun lang.”

You can listen to his remarks from 24:47 to 24:59:

However, Vera Files noted that even when President Duterte assumed office on June 30, 2016, his monthly salary was already set at P165,752 and he continued to receive the same amount until December 2016.

In January 2017, Duterte’s monthly earnings increased to P222,278. This is P92,278 more than what he said his salary was on January 25 and on April 10.

Duterte’s salary increase is due to former President Benigno Aquino III’s Executive Order No. 201, which mandated the increase of government officials’ salaries every year in four tranches. However, the order was only implemented during Duterte’s time where the salaries of the President, Vice President and members of Congress are concerned, as per the 1987 Constitution’s provision exempting the said officials from enjoying salary increases during their term.

When Aquino left his office, he was only receiving P120,000 per month.

By 2018, Duterte will be receiving P298,083 per month. This will further increase to P399,739 per month by 2019.
