BBC correspondent Jonathan Head on getting bashed: The joys of reporting the PH these days

Days after getting confronted by a Duterte supporter in the Philippines, BBC South East Asia correspondent Jonathan Head, he commented on the insults his bashers threw his way.

“The joys of reporting the Philippines these days,” he tweeted on November 16.

One of the bashers in his screenshot even wished for Head to “get raped.”

Head also got more bashing after tweeting about President Rodrigo Duterte’s use of fentanyl in excessive dosage.

On November 14, he tweeted, “Explains a lot. I wonder if he is still exceeding his dose of fentanyl?”

He was commenting on a Rappler tweet quoting Duterte, who said that he lacked sleep during the ASEAN Summit.

Sasot noticed Head’s fentanyl tweet, too, and posted a screenshot of it on her wall.

“Ladies and gentlemen. There you have it. Thank me later. NAKAKAHIYA SA BISITA! Pak! #UnapologeticPunk,” Sasot wrote on Facebook.

In another Facebook post, Sasot wondered whether other people can dare to curse at Head face-to-face, or retreat because he is a foreigner.

“Ngayon nabasa ang kaputahan ni Jonathan Head na ini-echo ang fentanyl slur ng Liberal Party laban kay Duterte, sa Facebook ka magagalit? Mumurahin mo si Head sa twitter? Ang tanong: Kaya mong gawin iyan as harap niya? O baka maiihi ka sa nerbyos kasi puti ang kausap mo? Puti na kabilang sa BBC na kayang sirain ang buhay mo kapag sila ay iyong kinanti?” Sasot asked.

Communications Asec. Mocha Uson also commented on Head’s tweet, as posted by Sasot.

“Hindi daw siya BIASED??? Wag kami pls,” Uson posted.

Because of that fentanyl remark, Head got bashed even more, with many comments accusing him to be biased.

Some even tagged BBC to call out Head on his tweet.

Another warned him to be careful if he ever returns to the Philippines.

This bashing came days after Head was confronted by staunch Duterte supporter Sass Sasot, who asked him how BBC interviewed Duterte critic Jover Laurio, a.k.a. Pinoy Ako Blog, a “minor blogger,” in her words, but not her, who has a bigger following than Laurio. Sasot slammed BBC for not getting the sides from the people whom Laurio slandered and libeled after criticizing Vice President Leni Robredo. She also asked which “powerful group” backed Laurio for her to get access to BBC, even mentioning the Liberal Party as the blogger’s sponsor. During the confrontation, Sasot also questioned why positive news about Duterte, such as signing the Freedom of Information order, did not make it to BBC News.
