Pulse Asia pres says approval of Duterte does not necessarily mean approval of drug war methods

Despite his administration being subject to a lot of criticisms, President Rodrrigo Duterte got a high trust rating in the latest survey conducted by Pulse Asia.

When asked to explain this result by Karen Davila on an interview in ANC’s “Headstart”, Pulse Asia President Ronald Homes said that the trust rating of President Rodrigo Duterte is different from the critiques his administration received both from local and international mass media.

Holmes stated that these criticisms people usually see in international papers are “expression of the ones that we can consider part of the elite,” while the results of their surveys are “aggregate of individual opinions of Filipinos.”

Duterte’s approval and trust ratings scored 86% while he got 11 points for ambivalence and 3 points for distrust. This survey from Pulse Asia was conducted three months after Duterte assumed the presidency.

The president of Pulse Asia also confirmed that they have also surveyed Filipinos about their opinion on the ongoing war against drugs by Duterte but the results are still being processed.

Holmes also commented that the public’s approval of Duterte and opinion of his method in fighting against drugs in the country are two very different things.

“The other thing that we should consider also is not to harp on the common belief that an approval on the part of the president is an approval of the methods. As I said, they don’t necessarily agree with the methods but they agree that the drug problem has to be solved,” Holmes said.

The issue whether the death tolls from this war against drugs under Duterte’s administration can be considered as “extrajudicial killings” is still unanswered. However, Holmes said that if enough evidence can be shown that these were indeed true—including police abuse in operations and operations done by vigilante groups—then a public outcry is to be expected.

Until then, there is a level of trust that had been bestowed by the public to Duterte’s administration, the Pulse Asia president added.
