Several Duterte Facebook fan pages congratulated Davao City Mayor and First Daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio for being awarded as the “best mayor.” At least that is what the articles that they are sharing claimed.
The articles were published by blogs like dutertemedia.com and balitangpinas.net, among others. They claimed that Inday Sara, as the Davao City mayor is popularly known, went home with $200,000 after winning in the “inaugural edition” of the President Jose Eduardo dos Santos World Best Mayor Award in the large cities category. She also received a certificate as part of the Second World Urban Infrastructure Investment Forum. The awarding was said to have been held in Bronx, New York on January 15.
Inday Sara even allegedly gave this statement upon receiving the award:
“This award will be an inspiration to move the city of Davao and indeed the Philippines forever forward, contributing to the development of Asia.”
Inday Sara also supposedly said that the award is a sign of excellence and a reminder for the residents of Davao that they are doing well but that they “must work harder in order to make Davao a place all of us will love to stay in.”
There was a source cited in the articles. Upon clicking the link, we were surprisingly directed to the fake news site of usa-television.com. This is the same site that published the fake news about Senator Leila De Lima buying a mansion in New York, a hoax that we busted.
We also found several other fake articles on the site, such as China cancelling alliance with the Philippines over Duterte’s comments during his visit in Japan, Canadian prime minister sending a lovely message to Duterte and the Filipinos, and American woman threatening to kill herself if she doesn’t marry Duterte, among others.
As for the article about Inday Sara winning as the best mayor, its claims proved to be fake because of the following inconsistencies:
- There is no “President Jose Eduardo dos Santos World Best Mayor Award.” There is, however, a “Jose Eduardo dos Santos African Mayor Awards.”
- There is no “Second World Urban Infrastructure Investment Forum.” What we found instead is an event called the “2nd Africa Urban Infrastructure Investment Forum.” Notice the pattern? The fake news site seemed to have replaced the word “Africa” with “World,” perhaps to justify including Inday Sara in the awarding.
- Inday Sara’s alleged acceptance speech can only be found in the blogs carrying the articles copied from the usa-television.com. The same thing goes with the snippet of her statement about the need for Davaoeños to “work harder.”
All these prove that the article claiming Inday Sara is the recipient of the best mayor award is not true.
What’s true, though, is her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, declining being nominated to “world mayor” for The City Mayors Foundation awarding in 2014, saying that he is only doing his job for the people. He also said that he does not like to accept awards “as a matter of principle.”
In October 2016, Inday Sara credited her father, the President, for Davao City’s Seal of Good Local Governance award from the Department of the Interior and Local Government. President Duterte served his home city for 22 years as mayor, vice mayor, and representative.
