As the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the EDSA Revolution nears, News5 decided to do an editorial on the Marcos’ ill-gotten wealth, particularly on the huge amount they managed to amass and where all of it came from.
Back in 2003, the Supreme Court of the Philippines computed and found that for more than two decades of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos’ service as President, the legitimate income of the Marcoses amounted to only P16.4 million, any excess to this amount according to the Supreme Court is illegal.
Fast forward to 2012, the SALN of Imelda Marcos, who states that she is poor, amounted to P922 million. The only work ever assigned to her is Minister of Human Settlements and Metro Manila Governor.

On the other hand, former Senator Bongbong Marcos’ 2013 SALN amounted to P437 million.
These are only pertaining to their declared wealth and does not include those which were confiscated.
According to the approximation of the PCGG, the amount they have confiscated from the Marcoses amounted to P188 billion. One example of which is the $780 million Swiss accounts, which the Marcoses cannot deny according to court because they fought for this for more than a decade.
News5 directly asked for an explanation of this wealth from Bongbong to which he stated that it was a legal issue and that his lawyers are the ones who are knowledgeable about the case.

“These are legal questions. The lawyers have been arguing. Again, these are decided cases. So, whatever the court has decided, we follow,” he stated.
He claims however that these are mere accusations from political rivals and at the end, ”history will judge.”
However, the computation on the wealth is far from over, particularly the $4 billion confiscated by the government and the $6 billion that are still hidden.
