US to clarify Duterte’s “separation” statement

The United States’ State Department is intent on asking for a clarification from the Philippines regarding President Rodrigo Duterte’s declaration of a “separation” from Washington, as they are baffled by the remarks and how these are in conflict with the close relationship of the two countries.

On Thursday, October 20, during Duterte’s state visit to China, he had spoken that “America has lost” its ties with the Philippines in both military and economic and that “I announce my separation from the United States.”

On this statement, State Department spokesman John Kirby explained, “We are going to be seeking an explanation of exactly what the president meant when he talked about separation from the U.S. It’s not clear to us exactly what that means in all its ramifications.”
