Busted: Former CHR chair said Duterte’s use of airplanes ‘unfair’ to ‘defenseless’ Maute? Fake meme!

Former Commission on Human Rights chairwoman Loretta “Etta” Rosales has become the subject of a false meme circulating on Facebook. The meme attributed a fake quote to her to make it seem as though she is sympathizing with the local terrorists Maute group.

Based on the meme, Rosales allegedly said, “… It is very unfair to the MAUTE GROUP, Duterte should not use airplanes walang kalaban laban yung mga MAUTE GROUP Kawawa naman sila, they should be treated with care, compassion and dignity.”

The meme also erroneously as identified her as someone who is still connected to the CHR, even if she already left the agency in 2015. The current CHR chair is Chito Gascon.

The fake meme has been shared on Facebook by pages such as “Bisaya Pa More,” “Rodrigo Duterte “Disisais,”” and “Favradio,” among others.

And of course, so many netizens easily fell for the meme, calling Rosales names.

But when we checked whether Rosales actually said the words that were attributed to her in the meme, we only found this result on Google.

This means that whoever created the meme just made up a fake statement and stamped Rosales’ name and face on it to trigger negative reactions from the netizens. Sadly, this isn’t the first time this trick has caused misinformation online. In fact, Meme Buster has debunked a lot of fake memes of this kind – attributing fake statements to certain people.

Rosales did react to President Duterte’s declaration of martial law in Mindanao. In a Philippine Star article, she expressed concern about how the proclamation might lead to human rights abuses.

“This will result in more human rights violations and massive evacuation of civilians resulting in internally displaced persons, once they start bombing and strafing,” she said.

This statement showed that if Rosales is actually concerned about how the bombing would lead to the displacement of the civilians, not the terrorists!

In a New York Times article, Rosales said that Duterte’s recent rape joke showed his authoritarian and misogynist character.

“He appears to exhibit the mind-set of a criminal, a woman hater, a person who thrills and derives dark pleasure from attacking treasured norms and values of families and societies. Thus he has no tolerance for human rights, which stand in the way of authoritarianism,” she said.

During the martial law under the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, Rosales was arrested, tortured and raped.
