SSS clarifies reports about computer glitch wiping out records of contributions

The Social Security System (SSS) clarified reports about a computer glitch wiping out the records of contributions of their members.

“Contrary to reports, SSS contribution records for 1985 to 1989 were not wiped out. They were already in the system and were just reposted, paving the way for pension adjustments for qualified pensioners which will be completed in three tranches by June 2017,” the SSS explained in a statement.

The agency gave the assurance that its record-keeping system is well-protected.

“Apart from the SSS database, members’ records are kept in hard copy as well as microfilm format. SSS has started the digitization of these records and maintains a record recovery site wherein all the SSS records are replicated,” the statement said.

There was an earlier report by ABS-CBN that records of contributions of hundreds of thousands of members were affected by a computer glitch when SSS digitized their records, so they were not reflected in the database.

A retiree who was interviewed said, “They (SSS) said the contributions exist, but they have to verify them. They apparently weren’t recorded.”

The number of contributions made by an SSS member determines the amount of benefits he or she receives upon retirement.

So far, as ABS-CBN reported, SSS has given back payment or adjustment to 154,357 retirees amounting to P7.2 billion.

Rappler reported that the SSS advised pensioners to check with SSS if they can qualify for back payments.
