Aiza Seguerra, Liza Dino appointed for top seats

Showbiz personalities Aiza Seguerra and Liza Dino were recently appointed to being chairpersons of different government agencies. Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella confirmed this in a text message to ABS CBN News which was also reported by News 5.

Seguerra was appointed chairperson of the National Youth Commission (NYC) and Dino as Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) chairperson. Both started work immediately on Monday and will serve on a three-year term.

Accordingly, both showbiz personalities were offered the post as early as July and were asked to submit their resumes in the same month. Seguerra, a popular singer and songwriter with a strong appeal among the young, said that among her priorities in the office is to change the image of the Sanguniang Kabataan (SK) by getting rid of alleged corruption there.

SK is reportedly taunted by some as the breeding ground for would-be corrupt officials among the youth. Some past SK officials were allegedly suspected of being involved in corruption while in office. However, Seguerra is challenged by these reports and looks forward to a cleaner SK during the singer’s term.

Seguerra would start by removing SK’s bad image. “Remove what they say about the SK being the nest or the start of corruption among the youth,” Seguerra said in a video interview with Aksyon. Moreover, Aiza appealed to the people for support on the “new chapter of my life” being a public servant.

Dino, on the other hand, is a former beauty queen. She represented the country during the Miss Tourism International in 2001. Later, she decided on an acting career appearing in some “tele-serye” TV soaps and also became involved in mainstream and independent films. Her replacing Briccio Santos as head of FDCP reportedly came as a surprise to many. Santos had been chair since 2010.

Liza appeared in the indie film “In Nomine Matris” in 2012 and started being recognized for her talents especially after winning several local and international awards. Among them are Best Actress awards during the Metro Manila Film Fest plus some more at the International Film Festival in Manhattan New York.

Both Seguerra and Dino have been staunch supporters of the Lumads in Mindanao, aside from being strong supporters of President Rodrigo Duterte in the recent presidential elections. In several of Aiza’s tweets, the new NYC head expressed excitement on the new government post and even replied to Bayan Secretary-General Renato Reyes how the singer-composer was dedicating the job “para sa bayan at sa pagpapayabong ng pelikulang Pilipino” (for the country and the promotion of Filipino films).
