News site philstar.i-telecast.com has reported that Bongbong Marcos is set out to be the next United Nations Secretary General after beating De Lima, who was also a contender for the spot.
According to the article, Marcos won against several high profile personalities, which included Senator Leila de Lima who allegedly placed high on the list due to former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s hope for a woman to take over the position.
If De Lima had won, she could have been the first woman to hold such a prestigious role since the formation of the United Nations in 1945. Unfortunately for her, Marcos reigned victorious despite the tough competition.
Last year, there were articles about De Lima having been appointed as the UN Secretary General but these reports were proven false.
This year, we prove that Bongbong Marcos’ appointment as the new UN Secretary General is also false.
True enough, Ban Ki-moon believed that it was “high time” for a female to lead the UN, following more than 70 years of the UN being led by eight male leaders.

He had indeed mentioned, without singling out a specific candidate, that there were “many distinguished, motivated women leaders who can really change this world, who can actively engage with the other leaders of the world.”
It is also correct that of the 11 candidates, five were women and six were men. But, here’s the catch; among these nominees, there was no Leila de Lima nor was there a Bongbong Marcos.
The candidates for the post were Irina Bokova (Bulgaria), Helen Clark (New Zealand), Christina FIgueres (Costa Rica), Natalia Gherman (Moldova), Antonio Guterres (Portugal), Vuk Jeremic (Serbia), Srgjan Kerim (Macedonia), Miroslav Lajcak (Slovakia), Igor Luksic (Montenegro), Susana Malcorra (Argentina), and Danilo Turk (Slovenia).
This alone is enough to falsify the report; however, it is our duty to provide the correct facts to the misinformed readers.
On October 13, 2016, the General Assembly of the United Nations appointed by acclamation Antonio Guterres, the former Prime Minister of Portugal, as the next United Nations Secretary General.

Hence, he is currently holding the esteemed position and will continue to do so in the next five years.
There is no truth to this news report in as much as there is no truth to philstar.i-telecast.com’s other articles we have busted such as Trump, Duterte, and Putin’s meeting in Moscow, new Thai King calling Duterte “my father,” Duterte banning mini-skirts, and many others.
Facebook user Joehida Addoquaye Quaye shared the link on Duterte’s fanpage and has been able to provide the wrong information to a number of Filipinos in the community.
Once again, this highlights how a simple act of sharing posts on the web that were not verified can produce a society filled with misinformed citizens.
