UP launches channel to offer free educational programs as alternative to fake articles online

Misinformation is rampant all over the Internet and more institutions have now started paying notice and taking an action to cut it right to at the root. For one, the University of the Philippines launched its online television network, TVUP, on Thursday, to start streaming educational programs, all for free.

The network will be webcasting “the best knowledge content” from the UP community to the rest of the world, UP President Alfredo Pascual said.

“We all know that our country is beset with many problems. [but] one way that universities like UP can help solve these problems is by creating these spaces, not just building classrooms and laboratories, but spaces like mindsets, values,  and attitudes,” said during TVUP’s launch at the UP Diliman campus in Quezon City.

The vision for TVUP is to become the alternative to misleading online “trash,” according to TVUP executive director Prof. Grace Alfonso, adding that the online network will give netizens the option to determine which articles are true, what the latest scientific innovations are, and so on.

TVUP is slated to offer at least 10 programs, such as a health education program “Kalusugan at Karapatan,” law program “Batas at Bayan,” financial literacy program “Financial Sense,” and historical program “Kasaysayan at Kapangyarihan.” It will also offer “Philippine Arts and Culture,” “Science Innovators,” and “The Platform.”

Award-winning documentaries and films will also receive airtime at TVUP through programs like “Documentaries: The Story of the Filipino” and “Maikling Pelikula.” Those who love to witness the musical talents of the Iskolars ng Bayan, such as the UP Madrigal Singers, UP Concert chorus, and UP Singing Ambassadors will get to hear them through “Musikahan.”

But TVUP may not only be limited to the UP community as it is open to collaborating with other universities.

TVUP funds, though, were only budgeted for three years. Beyond that time frame, the online network must be self-sustaining, hence the importance of partnering with other institutions.

TVUP programming is set to begin in 2017.
