Did Angelina Jolie say America need their own President Rodrigo Duterte to stop substance abuse?
At least that is the claim of an article shared by Facebook page MouseTV. The post has even gone viral after gaining 3,200 reactions and 4,619 shares, as of writing.
The article published on Leak News mentioned TMZ’s report about how Jolie filed a divorce from her husband, Brad Pitt, over raising their kids, anger, and substance abuse. Pitt was also alleged to be using weed and drinking, which led to Jolie mentioning Duterte and his war on drugs in the Philippines.
Jolie was even quoted saying, “I really think that abusing of any form of drugs should be completely eradicated. Especially here in America where anyone can buy the drug of their choice almost anywhere. I hope we find a Rodrigo Duterte to solve these growing problem that affects numerous American household.”
However, the article was actually lifted from a satirical blog NewsPH. It’s the same exact article with a little title change.
Even the website heading itself proudly announced that it is a “satire news for your entertainment.”
Note the grammatical errors in the quote attributed to Jolie, too. This alone might make you want to question the veracity of the site’s claims.
Duterte supporters flocked to the Facebook page that shared the article, pointing out that it is obviously a hoax. However, there were still others who believed in the article, based on those who shared the article without even commenting about it being a satire.
One of the commenters, though, may have a point as he said that Jolie is a UN ambassador to the refugees, which meant that she won’t likely tolerate summary execution.
Indeed, Jolie became a Goodwill Ambassador in 2001. In 2012, she was appointed as the Special Envoy to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. With her star power, Jolie is able to put a spotlight on the issues that would have otherwise escaped the notice of the mainstream press. She even urged the UN Security Council and the world to do more to help millions of Syrian refugees who had to leave their country due to war.
