Blogs with the shocking headline claiming that the Chinese woman nabbed carrying P6.2-million worth of shabu will be the first convict to be hanged in public, according to a ‘report,’ have been circulating online. In fact, a Facebook page of President Rodrigo Duterte’s “101% Duterte Supporters” shared that particular blog.
The blog was shared by the Facebook page on July 21 and has since earned 1,000 reactions, 226 comments, and 388 shares.
Many of the comments encouraged the hanging to teach the Chinese the other drug personalities a lesson. Others also mentioned the fact that China also hangs convicts involved with drugs.
But the blog was shared along with a post lifted off the report of Cebu-based newspaper Sun Star that was published on July 20 with a title, “Chinese woman carrying P6.2-M shabu nabbed at Cebu airport.”
While part of the blog from a site called Pinoyviral.com is true about the Chinese woman being caught with P6.2-million worth of contraband, the part about her being hanged in public is quite questionable.
Meme Buster looked at several reports from major newspapers and online dailies to verify if there was indeed a report indicating that the Chinese suspect will be punished by public hanging.

According to reports from newspapers like Sun Star and the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the 27-year old Liming Zhou arrived at Mactan-Cebu International Airport from Hong Kong on Wednesday. Her luggage, with a plywood partition, actually tried to conceal 4.5 kilos of shabu. The authorities found out that Zhou has visited Cebu several times this year. To conduct the investigation, the police has to call in an interpreter because Zhou only speaks Mandarin.
The latest report that we found is also from Sun Star, which was published on Friday, July 22. It says that authorities have charged Zhou for violating Sections 4, 5 and 11 of Republic Act 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002).
- Section 4 – Importation of dangerous drugs and/or controlled precursors and essential chemicals
- Section 5 – Sale, trading, administration, dispensation, delivery, distribution and transportation of dangerous drugs and/or controlled precursors and essential chemicals
- Section 11 – Possession of dangerous drugs
The same report also said the charges were filed against Zhou on Thursday afternoon, July 21, and that inquest proceedings ended at 6:45pm. A resolution of the case is expected to be issued at 1pm today, which meant Zhou will then be delivered to the proper authorities. Before the issuance of the resolution, Zhou had to be detained in the Aviation Security Unit (Avseu) 7 office.
There was no mention anywhere of a PUBLIC HANGING. The claim that there is a ‘report’ regarding Zhou’s public hanging is misleading! It could just be the opinion of many netizens who are calling for death penalty as punishment for drug personalities, but the alleged ‘report’ about Zhou’s hanging is completely FICTIONAL. Moreover, a death penalty bill still has to be filed in Congress, as what we’ve busted before.
