Thousands of farmers and supporters staged a demonstration in the Davao-Cotabato Highway in Kidapawan, North Cotabato from March 30 to April 1, 2016, when they met a violent end. The protesters wanted to ask for help from the government in the wake of the results of El Niño in the area since November 2015 and the fact that the NFA did not distribute rice despite the area being under a state of calamity.
When the PNP tried to disperse the protesters, that was when the violence started.

On April 1, the LP presidential candidate Mar Roxas and his running mate Leni Robredo released a statement regarding the incident, all the while calling for an investigation to be conducted to determine who were responsible for the death and injuries of those involved in the incident.
The first task of the day is to restore order to the area and make sure that no clash happens again. The wounded on either side should be tended to. I call on the PNP and other concerned agencies to investigate as to the true cause of the clash and, if warranted, punish those who may be accountable.”
It pays to be vigilant in seeking the truth.
