Teresita Ssen “Winwyn” Marquez just won the Reina Hispanoamericana 2017 title in Bolivia, but she has immediately become a victim of a story, which turned to be a satirical one. Marquez was said to have called President Rodrigo Duterte the best president in the world during the pageant.

The story was first published by Okd2.com but it has since been picked up by other blogs, such as bayangpilipinas.com, updatedpinoytv.blogspott.com, newsinfo.favradiofm.com, pinoynewsonline.info, among others.
It has been shared by Facebook pages “Duterte Supporters Worldwide” “PilipiKnows,” and “Favradio FM,” and “OKd2.” It was also shared by some netizens to Facebook groups, such as “Protector of Our Beloved President Digong !!,” “President Rody Duterte Facebook Army,” and “Federal for Better Philippines.”
And the netizens fell for the story!
However, Okd2’s story is merely satirical. But at least Okd2 made the effort to develop an interview transcript in Spanish, which reportedly proved that Marquez did call Duterte as the best president in the world.
“El president Duterte es el mejor presidente de Filipinas u, para mi, es el mejor presidente del mundo. Solo puedo decir cosas buenas de el y el cuenta con el apoyo del 90% de la poblacion Filipina.” (President Duterte is the Philippine’s best president, and for me, he is the best president in the world. I can only say good things about him and he has the support of 90% of the Filipino people.)
Marquez’s response allegedly shocked the host, who changed the topic to focus back on the pageant.
We even tried to verify whether Marquez really made that statement, even though we know that she is not well-versed in Spanish and guess what the number 1 search engine result was? Of course, it was Okd2’s story.
In this ABS-CBN report, Marquez reportedly thanked her fellow candidates for assisting her in translating the questions during their interviews, which are primarily spoken in Spanish. Even her father, actor-comedian Joey Marquez, said that one of their worries for his daughter was not fluent in Spanish.

And yet, Okd2’s made-up transcript made it seem like Marquez knew how to speak Spanish.
Okd2 has been quite productive in producing fake and “satirical” articles, which have managed to fool people in the past. Some of the stories that the site made up are about former President Aquino mocking why it took Duterte’s admin 5 months to kill Hapilon compared to the SAF forces spending a day to kill Marwan, Russian ships gave Duterte 32,000 firearms, Chinese ship delivering 310,000 metric tons of construction materials for Marawi, CBCP condemning the brutal killing of Hapilon and Maute, and more.
Marquez brought honor to the Philippines by winning the Reina Hispanoamericana 2017 crown, but unlike what Okd2 and the other netizens thought, she did not praise Duterte as the best president in the world during her interview portion in the pageant.
Her winning answer during the Q&A portion was how kindness can transcend language barriers.
“Language can be learned but the will and determination to contribute to the organization cannot. It has to come from the heart. It has to be natural. I believe that kindness is a universal language that if you treat people with tolerance, patience and love, you will understand each other.
“The Hispanic culture is not about language only. It’s about love for God, love for country, love for history and culture and love for family. As a Filipina with a unique heritage, I have instilled that. I am ready to promote the Hispanic culture not just in Asia but in the whole world. It is time to celebrate the Hispanic culture. It is meant to be celebrated.”
