Palace says Duterte’s claim that Trillanes closed DBS account online, DBS’ reply both unverified

Malacañang said President Rodrigo Duterte’s claim that Senator Antonio Trillanes closed his Singapore bank account online is “unverified,” and so is the bank’s supposed reply that account closures can only be done in person or by mailing the form to them.
Duterte said on September 29 in his PTV-4 interview that Trillanes closed his account with the Development Bank of Singapore (DBS) days before leaving for Singapore to disprove the President’s earlier claim that he owns an account there.

However, the DBS Bank said that that they do not allow bank account holders to close their accounts online. The account holder has to visit the branch personally or fill out and mail them a closure authorization form.

Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella described Duterte and the bank’s response as unverified.
“Well, you know, that’s also unverified. All of these things have to be verified clearly,” Abella said

“The President claims that it was done that way. And then there’s another party that says it’s not. So both aspects need to be verified,” he added.

Duterte accused Trillanes of having offshore bank accounts and receiving money after his backchannel talks with China over Scarborough Shoal.

Trillanes flew to Singapore to prove the President wrong on his foreign bank account claims, which led to the DBS Bank saying the senator has no account with them. In response, Duterte said he “invented” the bank account number he accused Trillanes of having in order to fool the senator.

Trillanes also dismissed Duterte’s allegations against him to divert attention from the President’s alleged unexplained wealth.
