Busted: Russian FM told Duterte Russia’s doors are open to Filipinos? Fake news!

A website claimed that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov thanked President Rodrigo Duterte for maintaining Russia-PH relations and told him that Filipinos are welcome to Russia.

The source, cnnnews-channel.com, included a direct quote from Lavrov: “Russia’s doors are open for your citizens.”

Lavrov reportedly said this after Duterte toured the Russian-guided missile cruiser Varyag on April 21 when it visited the Philippines. His remarks were part of his statement showing his appreciation of the good working relations between his country and the Philippines.

However, we didn’t find any other media outlet covering Lavrov’s alleged statement to Duterte after the Philippine president’s visit to Varyag. This is something that the website merely made up.

We Googled the direct quote attributed to Lavrov, but we found out that it was only ever published on cnnnews-channel.com. No other media outlets carried that statement from the Russian foreign minister at all.

Upon checking the other stories on the website, this turned out to be just one of the stories it seemed to have written as part of its growing list of hoax articles.

The screenshots above showed that the fake news site seemed to be an expert in making up fake stories about Senator Leila de Lima, one of Duterte’s most vocal critics who is now incarcerated for drug charges.

It might be safer to avoid reading anything that has come from cnnnews-channel.com. It has the makings of a growing fake news site with its website name and its many published hoaxes.
