Busted: Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation debunks #NagaLeaks claim, said Robredo is ‘fully deserving’ of award

The late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo allegedly won the Ramon Magsaysay Award through the lobbying and PR work of his friend, Gabby Bordado, according to the #NagaLeaks expose made by the group “We Are Collective.”

However, the award-giving body’s president behind the award, the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF), through its president, Carmencita T. Abella, issued a clarification denying #NagaLeaks’ claims on Tuesday, March 7.

Abella added that Robredo is a “fully deserving and highly respected Ramon Magsaysay laureate.”

“The allegation that Jesse Robredo won the Magsaysay Award because of some person’s lobbying efforts HAS NO BASIS IN FACTS. There is no person by the name of Gabby Bordado (as cited in the “collective.com.ph” blog) who was involved in the RMAF’s review, deliberation, and selection of Jesse Robredo as the 2000 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Government Service,” Abella said.

“The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation considers Jesse Robredo a fully deserving and highly respected Ramon Magsaysay laureate,” she added.

Abella also emphasized how they sanction PR, lobbying or similar actions to influence their choice of the next awardee.

“To safeguard the integrity of the Ramon Magsaysay Award, the guiding principles and practices of RMAF for the past 58 years have not allowed any lobbying, PR, or other similar attempts to influence the annual selection of Ramon Magsaysay Awardees. Any such attempts, whether in the nomination or the selection process, have been quickly and firmly sanctioned,” Abella said.

She also urged readers to do check the facts behind “anonymous and undocumented claims” involving their award.

“The Foundation cautions all readers to fact-check anonymous and undocumented claims about the Ramon Magsaysay Award, in order to avoid making erroneous and unfair conclusions concerning the Award and/or the Ramon Magsaysay Awardees,” she added.

Earlier, We Are Collective was slammed for using photos of President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo on their blog without asking for the photographers’ permission. They were also exposed for providing fake WHOIS info.
