Busted: Putin’s remark about promising good news when he meets Duterte is FAKE!

President Rodrigo Duterte has made several remarks about how excited he was to meet Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin, how he would like to ally with Russia, and how Putin is his “hero.” These are all true statements from the Philippine President. However, several hoax makers seem to want more exchanges between the two leaders, so much so that they came up with several fake articles claiming that Putin has also made statements about Duterte.

Recently, several Duterte Facebook fan pages shared an article, which they considered “breaking news,” claiming that Putin promised to have “good news” once he meets with Duterte.

All three fan pages even have the same captions as they shared the article: “Grabe ang galing mo tatay Digong d best ka talaga. Napaka gandang balita ito para sa ating lahat. Ito ang simula ng pag bangon ng Pilipinas. Please Share this Good News.”

Based on that caption alone, the admins of the fan pages bought the article and believed it to be true.

According to the article shared by Newstrendph.com, which made it to Meme Buster’s list of sites sharing fake articles, Putin also wants a “good relationship” with Duterte and even “promised to work hand-in-hand” with the Philippine president.

Putin was also quoted in the article: “I want to promise you good news from Philippines, i’m going to sit down with Philippines President my brother Rodrigo Duterte and we will come up with a good working plan to ensure our community is fully protected.”

The article also noted how supportive Putin is of Duterte’s presidency and how both leaders “seem to be long term friends.”

According to the article, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey has confirmed Putin’s attendance at the APEC Economic Leader’s Meeting (AELM) “in Manila next month.”

Sergey was quoted saying: “President Vladimir has confirmed to be attending the meeting in Philippines and indeed we are excited to meet Mr. Duterte.”

The meeting is set to take place in Metro Manila with the attendance of the leaders of the 21 member economies of APEC.

We tried to verify if that quote promising good news really came from Putin, but it seemed to be made up, seeing as how the only source of the statement was only Newstrendph, aside from the fact that the sentence construction is quite odd.

Moreover, the fact that the article brought up something about an APEC meeting to be held next month, November 2016, in Metro Manila is puzzling. The APEC 2016 Economic Leaders’ Meeting is scheduled to be held on November 19 to 20, 2016 in Lima, Peru, not in Metro Manila. If there was a time when Putin was set to come to the Philippines for the APEC meeting in Manila, it was in November 2015, although he missed the summit and sent Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev instead.

When we check Newstrendph’s source, it turned out to be noted hoax maker BBC-Channel.com, the misleading site that is not related to BBC.

So, no, Putin did not say anything about “good news” when he meets Duterte. As of now, there is no scheduled meeting between the two leaders since Putin did not attend the ASEAN Summit in Laos in September. It’s all made up by whoever is behind BBC-Channel.com.
