On May 24, President Rodrigo Duterte claimed that the members of the Maute group beheaded a local police chief.

“The chief of police in Malabang on his way home, going back he was stopped by a checkpoint manned by terrorists and I think they decapitated them right then and there,” the President said in a news conference.

However, Malabang Police chief Romeo Enriquez later surfaced on May 26 that he is safe. He told The Associated Press that he is fine, adding that he might have been confused with the former Malabang police chief who was killed in fighting, without being beheaded, on May 23.
Enriquez said that his predecessor was shot dead during the conflict with the terrorists outside a Marawi hospital.
The clash between government troops and the Maute group erupted on Tuesday night when the military launched an operation in Marawi City based on intelligence reports about the presence of Isnilon Hapsilon and his cohorts in the city.
