Busted: Noli De Castro Did NOT “Endorse” Duterte on TV

De Castro, famous news anchor (and former vice president during President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s term), was apparently so pissed off by the scheme where a bullet was reportedly slipped into the luggage of airport passengers who’d later be apprehended for possession of deadly ammunition.

De Castro was further irritated by the fact that this time around the victim is a 75-year old grandmother, Salvacion Cortabista, on her way to the US for an urgent medical treatment. Consequently, her trip to the US is being delayed by her detention.

Later on, Failon hinted that the inspection staff involved in the case should be the ones imprisoned. But De Castro said it couldn’t be done because the involved staffs were too many. Instead, De Castro jestingly suggested that their chief should be the one imprisoned for the matter. Whether it was the supervisor of the inspecting staff of the NAIA administrator he was referring wasn’t clear.

Alleged Endorsement

Then he said the controversial statement that others construed as endorsement for Duterte:

Noli De Castro

“Hindi ito biro; sana tig-iisang magpahayag ang mga kandidato sa pagka-pangulo,” then he paused a bit and continued, “sa pangunguna ni Duterte.”
(This isn’t a joke. The presidential candidates should each issue a statement [on the “Laglag Bala” issue and the alleged involvement of Cortabista], starting with Duterte.)

If taken from an objective and honest point of view (and taken from its context), De Castro’s statement was not an endorsement but merely a suggestion that all presidentiables should give their clear stand on the issue since it has become a national issue—and that Duterte should start it, since probably because he is the hottest campaign issue today.

If it was indeed an “accidental endorsement” as what others conclude, an appropriate confirmation should come from De Castro himself to clarify the issue once and for all.
