Busted: FB pages posted photo of cop assaulted by protesters, but it was taken in 2013!

When protesters took their grievances against the United States to a rally in front of the US Embassy, the level of violence escalated immediately after a cop, driving a police van, ran over several protesters.

Aside from that graphic video of the police vehicle running over and hurting several protesters, this photo also caught the attention of netizens online. It was uploaded by Facebook pages “President Durterte Supporters Worldwide” and “Proud Bisaya,” with the caption: “Sana makita rin ang ginawa ng mga raliyista sa mga pulis.”

The caption left a lot of room for interpretation (or misinterpretation) and the latter is evident in the comments section.Cop Assaulted by Protesters

Some netizens even asked why this wasn’t reported by the media, once again calling them biased.Cop Assaulted by Protesters

However, that photo was taken on January 31, 2013, when activists and farmers stormed the National Anti-Poverty Commission compound in Quezon City. The farmers then demanded the release of the coco levy fund, which was already awarded to them through court ruling.

Without the proper caption or explanation as to the circumstances behind the photo they uploaded, these Facebook pages only fueled further hate and confusion regarding the US Embassy dispersal. Whoever violated the law during that October 19 anti-US rally, be it the protesters or the police, should be held liable. But sharing misleading information, like what these Facebook pages are doing, isn’t helping anybody.
