Busted: Duterte is the ‘most powerful person in the world’? Blogs just used another false title!

Duterte fan pages on Facebook have posted their congratulatory messages on Facebook as they shared an article proclaiming President Rodrigo Duterte as the “most powerful person in the world.” As what has happened many times before, they even shared the same exact caption. As Rappler has put it, “copy-paste, mga bes?”

Some of the fan pages that racked up hundreds of shares since their posting on January 20 are “Duterte Para sa Pagbabago,” “Duterte Warriors,” and “Duterte Parallel Organization – Tagumpay ng Pagbabago.”

These pages picked their content up from blogs like du30info.com and balitangpinas.net, although both blogs shared the same content – a YouTube clip that runs for over 8 minutes.

The clip started off with a screenshot of Forbes’ list of “The World’s Most Powerful People,” with Russian President Vladimir Putin at first place, US President Donald Trump and the Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel at second and third place, respectively.

However, the rest of the clip showed parts of Duterte’s speeches wherein he swore at several entities. He called out the human rights commission to not complain about his mouth, adding that his “mouth is not the problem.”

We later found out that it was actually Rappler’s compilation of Duterte’s curses, which they titled “A foul-mouthed 2016: The year in Duterte’s curses.”

Does this mean that the Duterte supporters’ blogs and Facebook pages believed that what made Duterte powerful is his foul mouth?

It is obvious, too, that the title used by the blogs was a misleading one because Duterte ranked number 70 on the list of 74 people. But his name is also one of the 11 new names added on the list, according to Rappler. The title “the most powerful person in the world” should then go to Putin, being that he ranked first on the list.

Moreover, President Duterte himself called his inclusion on the list “corny.”

“I don’t need it, I’m not powerful. I’m just running a country,” he said, as reported by GMA News Online.

“Nakokornihan ako. I find it very corny. I do not even impose my leadership on the Filipino people,” he added.

Addressing what could have qualified his inclusion on the list, Duterte said, “I have no power. If the power, if it means killing, attributing to the 5,000 makes me a powerful man by killing Filipinos. That is a shame. I do not accept the title.”

“No, I’m not (powerful). So what’s the basis? Is killing 5,000 Filipinos it would make me powerful? You think I enjoy killing Filipinos?” Duterte added.
