Busted: ‘World’s most powerful’ person Putin coming to the Philippines? That was in 2015!

Some Facebook pages celebrated the fact that Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin is coming to the Philippines.

Facebook page Philippine Government Under Scrutiny shared the article on October 27, captioning it: “Maganda ito kapag totoo ang balita!! First time in history!”

Putin Coming to The Philippines

Based on over 70 shares, there were netizens who believed that this is recent news.

With further search on Facebook, we found out that several other Facebook pages, many of which were Duterte fan pages, shared the same news, as posted by different blogs, in September.

President Rodrigo Duterte has repeatedly expressed his admiration of the Russian leader, even choosing Putin when he was asked to choose between American presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. This could be why his supporters are rejoicing over the news about Putin coming to the Philippines.

Duterte fan page Byaheng Duterte even claimed on September 12 that Putin wanted to visit the Philippines to check how Duterte is running the country.

“Tinaguriang ‘World Most Powerful’ person gustong pumunta dito sa ating bansa na si Pres. Putin ng RUSSIA para makipagkita kay Pres. Duterte para Makita nya mismo ang pamamalakad ni tatay Digong sa ating bansa… Anong masasabi nyo dito mga ka DDS? Iba na talaga si tatay mismong mga sikat na lider na ang kusang magpunta dito para lang makipagkita sa kanya. Share natin to para kay tatay digong…” Byaheng Duterte wrote.

But even the article posted by Du30newsinfo was already removed, probably realizing that there was something amiss with the article.

We found out that the article is actually a CNN Philippines report that was published on November 9, 2015.

Putin Coming to The Philippines

According to CNN, the title “world’s most powerful” person was given to Putin by Forbes magazine due to the fact that the Russian leader is “one of the few men in the world powerful enough to do what he wants – and get away with it.”

What the Facebook fan pages failed to comprehend is that Putin was supposed to come to the Philippines in November 2015 to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ meeting in Manila. However, it was later reported that Putin decided to miss the APEC meeting and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev represented him instead.

So far, despite Duterte’s remarks involving Putin, even calling Putin his “hero,” there has been no talks about the Russian president visiting the Philippines.
